Discovery 4 is Avalon’s first ever net-zero home. There has been a lot of interest in the home, according to Alex Zahavich, director of Applied Research and Innovation at SAIT. The main attraction to the house is the whole “green” aspect, said Zahavich. The fact that electric and heating costs of the house are lower is also an attraction, he said.

CALGARY — Stability in the energy sector and the emergence of Calgary as a distribution hub are fuelling development in the region these days.
The Oxford Airport Business Park, a master planned, mixed-use $500-million project on 104 hectares of land near the Calgary International Airport, will be officially launched on Wednesday during a ceremony on the site.
Kevan Gorrie, vice-president of industrial for Oxford Properties which is developing the site, said the first two industrial distribution/warehouse facilities will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2012. Calgary’s resale housing market see-sawed its way up and down through the transition from summer to fall, according to the Calgary Real Estate Board’s September report.
On a year-over-year basis, sales of both single-family homes and condos were up from September last year, but down from August this year — the latter not being such an unusual event every year on the resale side of the market.
Average prices were up slightly year over year, but up dramatically from August.

Calgary’s resale housing market is showing strong signs of activity at higher levels than a year ago.
Preliminary data from the Calgary Real Estate Board indicates single-family home sales between Oct. 1-10 hit 323 transactions for an average MLS sale price of $456,387. Last year for the same period, there were 267 sales for an average of $435,867.
The condo market is also seeing a surge in activity. So far this month, there have been 101 sales, up from 81 sales a year ago for the same period. Employers in this province added a further 8,600 net positions to payrolls in September, the fifth consecutive month of positive job creation. TORONTO – Canadian home prices spiked unexpectedly by as much as 7.8 per cent in the most recent quarter, but such dramatic increases aren’t likely to last, according to a housing report released Wednesday.
The Royal LePage House Price Survey warned that the average price for a Canadian house in the third quarter was driven higher by the effect of expensive cities like Vancouver and Toronto, overshadowing the fact that price increases slowed and values even fell in some areas.

The economy may be a little shaky, but housing sales in Calgary remain healthy.
According to the latest Royal Lepage survey, most Calgary house prices increased year-over-year.
Standard condos saw the largest increase, up more than three per cent to just over $254,000.
The average standard two-storey home costs almost $415,000; a one per cent increase.
