City Approves 100% Levy Hike

Calgary Real Estate News

Developers will now pay more for infrastructure in new communities — a cost that will likely be passed on the homebuyers.

After months of negotiations and hours of council debate, an agreement was reached between the City of Calgary and the development industry.

“There’s no question that the current fee level is too low,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “As I’ve been saying for many, many, many months, every time we put up a new home at the outskirts of the city, that new home costs us somewhere between $10,000 to $15,000.” Want to read more in depth on this article? Calgary Real Estate News

Calgary’s development industry is urging council to accept a new suburban levy deal that adds about $8,000 per new home, but also demands the city commit to reining in the costs of building new communities.

The developers’ main lobby group hopes aldermen don’t tinker with the deal — although at least one admits she’s disappointed by it — but opposes the plan to make undeveloped areas help the city recoup three-quarters of the price tag for the proposed airport tunnel.
